Upon launch, the Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG variants will become the first CNG cars in India to get automatic trims

Tata Motors has teased new variants of the Tiago and the Tigor CNG ahead of their launch in a few weeks. The teaser image outlines the gear shift lever of an automatic variant, and we believe it is for the CNG option as the petrol-powered Tiago and Tigor already have it. Once launched, these will be the first CNG cars to be offered with an automatic transmission in India.

Based on the teaser image, we expect it will be the same AMT units that do the job on the petrol-powered versions and of course, will be offered on the higher XT and XZ+ variants. We expect no changes in terms of design which means both the Tiago and the Tigor will get the same new grille, reworked front and rear bumper, a new air dam, fog lights, black ORVMs, and a new set of 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, which were a part of the updates last year.

The interior will remain the same with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a fully digital instrument cluster, auto climate control, a stylish flat-bottom steering wheel, an engine start-stop button, and a cooled glove box.

Both the Tiago and the Tigor are powered by the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated Revotron petrol engine that produces 85bhp of power and 113Nm of torque in the petrol avatar but while running on CNG, they produce 72bhp of power and 95Nm of torque. The petrol versions get a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT unit, while the CNG versions came only with the 5-speed manual until now.

While driving the CNG variants of both the Tiago and the Tigor, we felt that the drop in power and torque outputs did not affect the driving in most of the situations. The transition from petrol to CNG and vice-versa is seamless and these are probably the only vehicles where you can start the car in CNG mode itself.

With the introduction of the automatic variants, it might be a small step for Tata, but it opens a lot of new possibilities for other manufacturers to follow suit. Looking at the trend of consumers switching to automatic transmission and considering the market is looking at other fuel options, you already have the strong hybrid engines which are fuel-efficient and convenient as they come with automatic transmission, but the CNG along with the AMT transmission will be affordable as well.
