The Mitsuoka M55 concept is a Honda Civic transformed into a Dodge Challenger lookalike, set to go into production in late 2025, with limited numbers expected
Mitsuoka, the Japanese coach-builder, is set to turn its M55 Concept into a production reality by 2025, in response to overwhelming demand. Initially based on the 11th generation Honda Civic, this quirky model has undergone a significant visual transformation, morphing into a Dodge Challenger clone with a distinctive five-door fastback bodystyle. The M55 Concept seamlessly blends ’70s nostalgic references with modern design elements.
This quirky concept, unveiled in November 2023, strategically conceals its Honda Civic origins beneath an extensively redesigned exterior. Transformative changes include a front end that echoes the Dodge Challenger, featuring quad round headlamps housed within an end-to-end front grille. The fastback tail, reminiscent of the Ford Mustang, completes the retro muscle car aesthetic, elevating the Mitsuoka M55 into a unique fusion of vintage and modern design elements.
Internally, Mitsuoka has kept modifications to a minimum, retaining the minimalist dashboard from the Honda Civic while introducing retro-themed upholstery and subtle Mitsuoka badging. The company’s commitment to maintaining the essence of the original Honda model is evident in these restrained interior adjustments.

The M55 Concept, initially showcased as a celebratory creation for Mitsuoka’s 55th anniversary, surpassed expectations at auto shows and exhibitions, drawing attention from enthusiasts and prospective buyers. The overwhelming response, marked by over 1,300 applications expressing interest in purchasing the vehicle, has prompted Mitsuoka to pivot from a one-off concept to a production reality.
While the production version is slated for release in late 2025, Mitsuoka acknowledges potential constraints in meeting the fervent demand due to its limited handmade production capacity. Details regarding pricing and specific release dates remain undisclosed, adding an air of anticipation to this unconventional transformation.

The Mitsuoka M55’s exclusivity is further emphasized by its availability as a right-hand drive model, with sales restricted to Japan. The coach-builder’s imaginative design approach, crafting custom headlights, taillights, and rear window louvres, is inspired by iconic ’70s Japanese coupes and the iconic Ford Mustang Mach 1. As the M55 evolves from concept to production, it promises to be a distinctive, unconventional automobile, which will be one of the quirkiest additions to anyone’s garage.
